Chapter Fourteen

They lay there occasionally chuckling lightly to themselves, knowing that each of the others could hear them. However, they weren’t laughing for each other, just themselves and knowing that none of them were human anymore, at least not physically. Not knowing if they were holding on to that last bit of humanity or just pretending to have some left within them, but they knew they were like each other. These three lay there on these slab-like beds like they were on display. They didn’t need to sleep, at least not like the others. Maybe a rest or recharge, but not like a real human. They each wondered to themselves if they were too far gone, too different to be like the others, if that’s why they were here in this room together.

Together, at least they had each other, people who could understand what they were feeling, this isolation and loneliness that wouldn’t leave even when they had a ship full of crewmates. Time ticked away as they listened to each other’s breath and the rhythmic pounding, or lack thereof, of their hearts, keeping time that was ever so slowly slipping away. “Well, I think he’s right, Colson, we might as well head down to docking and see if we can find some pieces to replace your damaged suits.” Tish had begun and ended her sentence with a sigh, not wanting to get back to work but knowing nothing productive was coming from them lying here. They slowly and not without grumbling in protest, got moving and left the med bay where Colson had realized he had been spending too much time since he had awoken.

Tish led the way with Colson and Desmond trailing on either side of her. They were quiet as they trudged along, moving lower into the ship. “I should probably stop off in the kitchen and grab some food to speed this arm growth up. Think that’s a good idea, Doc?” The arm had been steadily growing and Colson figured at this rate it should almost be whole in just about a day. It was mostly formed just thinner and a little shorter than his full body.

“Jesus, Desmond, that’s creepy.” Colson cringed as the creepy little arm flexed its unjointed fingers with what little wiry muscle it had, being able to be seen under the tight flesh pulled taught like scar tissue. The pink skin did not even look like it belonged on his arm, with the color contrast being so pronounced. “Please, eat whatever it takes to get that thing back to normal.”

Desmond let out a hissing chuckle as he turned to walk into the kitchen to get food. “I’ll be down in a few; y’all go on, so I don’t give Colson any more nightmares.” He waved his deformed appendage goodbye, causing a shiver to run down Colson’s spine.

“You know, Tish, I wish I had my memories if for nothing else so that I have creepier things to compare that to. I know they’re there, but I can’t remember, and that makes that the creepiest thing I’ve ever seen.
